Volunteering Opportunities
We understand scooping poop isn't for everyone. There are many opportunities for you to help the shelter's animals by interacting with them directly, or by volunteering your time in other ways to help the Humane Society maintain operations.

  • Wanted: Foster Parents!

We are looking for good people willing to open their homes and hearts to help animals in need of extra care. This includes kittens and puppies or adult animals needing socialization, a quiet place to recuperate from an injury or illness or adoptable pets waiting for a permanent home. All foster parents must be licensed by the Kansas Animal Health Department for a fee of $10.00 and applications are available at the shelter. JCHS will provide food, vaccines and any medical treatment needed while the animal is in your care. If you would like more information on being a foster parent, please email us at www.jfcountypets.com or call 785-945-6600
  • Dog Walking & Training — Many high-energy dogs would love to accompany you on a daily walk around the shelter grounds. Others need to brush up on their sit & stay routine. You can help make their stay at the shelter as comfortable as possible and help them become excellent pets.

  • Cat Handling & Gentling — Some shelter cats want to be handled, held, and cuddled all the time, and some just need your company. Play interaction is a stress reliever for both the cat and the human—it's a win-win situation.

  • Office / Clerical — We could use your help answering phones, taking notes, mailing membership reminders and newsletters, and assisting customers.

  • Transporting animals — Shelter pets need to be transported by volunteers to veterinarians or breed rescue groups from time to time. Would you like to deliver animals?

  • Fundraising — Do you enjoy knitting, sewing? One of the ways we raise funds is by selling knit 'snuggles' and stuffed dog toys, and we could sure use your production skills. We also need help organizing and conducting special events or fundraising programs.

  • Other skills — You don't have to be a dog-trainer or cat-cuddler to lend a hand at the shelter. If you have hobbies like writing, drawing, photography, or woodworking, let us know and we're sure to find a way you can volunteer
