The Jefferson County Humane Society was formed in 1998 by a group of citizens concerned about abandoned and stray animals in Jefferson County, KS. On January 2, 2006, JCHS opened a shelter in Valley Falls. The building was a former veterinary clinic and we keep it licensed as a shelter and a veterinary clinic.
Jefferson County Humane Society is a no-kill shelter. We only euthanize an animal if it is medically necessary or aggressive and we are not able to make the animal adoptable. We have had a consistent positive outcome (adoptions and return to owners) greater than 90%.
In the past few years, we have added cat rooms and puppy rooms. In December, 2010 we bought the facility with six acres. We are currently building large play yards to allow our dogs to be outside as much as possible with each other.
We also have ten cat kennels at the PetSmart in Topeka. Being at PetSmart allows our kitties TONS of face time that they wouldn't otherwise get. We've had a great turnout with adoptions from PetSmart, so if you can't make the drive to Valley Falls, stop by Topeka and see some of our critters there!
Our staff consists of five part-time employees, including a shelter manager, adoption specialist, and three kennel techs. We are very proud of our staff, who are all very dedicated to taking care of the animals and helping them find new homes. We are also fortunate to have volunteers who help with kennel cleaning, animal care, and special events.
Over 90% of our funding comes from private donations and fundraisers. Two of the cities in Jefferson County, Oskaloosa and Meriden, provide monthly support which allows them access to the shelter for strays. The majority of our animals are brought in by private citizens as strays. We do not charge citizens for intakes but we do appreciate a donation. We also take animals that an owner needs to surrender. There is a small fee for owner surrenders.
We are committed to all pets being spayed and neutered. All of our animals leaving the shelter are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and dogs are also heartworm tested and temperament tested.
See our facility and meet our staff!
