Lost & found
One of the services the Humane Society offers Jefferson County residents is helping reunite pets with their lost owners. If you find or lose a pet, please contact us online, or call us at 785-945-6600.
Get your pet spayed or neutered to prevent it from straying. The vast majority of stray dogs the Humane Society shelter takes in are intact males, out roaming for 'girlfriends'. Not only will spaying/neutering help keep your pet at home where he or she belongs, it will prevent dozens of unwanted puppies and kittens from being produced.

Found a pet?
Contact the Humane Society if you have found a stray/dumped cat or dog, or if you have seen a stray pet out roaming. We will catalog the information and try to match it with other lost & found reports. If you live within city limits, contact animal control or bring the animal to the shelter yourself.
If it's possible for you to care for the stray, please post it on our website's lost & found list. You should also contact your neighbors, post flyers, and notify your city government if necessary.
There is no county-wide animal control service for strays, so if you live outside city limits, your only option is to bring the animal into the shelter yourself. If the animal is vicious, injured, sick, or has bitten someone, call law enforcement.

Lost a pet?
If you came home and found your pet missing, assume it has strayed from home and immediately begin looking and calling for it. It's unlikely that your pet was stolen unless it is a particularly 'valuable' breed, like a pit bull, that can be resold by the thieves. If you do have reason to believe it was stolen, report your suspicion to local law enforcement.

  • Contact area shelters: Call the Jefferson County Humane Society at 785-945-6600 (leave a message after-hours). You might also make calls to the Lawrence Humane Society (785-843-6835), Helping Hands Humane Society, Topeka (785-233-7325), Heart of Jackson County Humane Society (785-364-5156), and Atchison Humane Society (913-367-3647) to see if your pet shows up there.

  • Contact your neighbors: They may have seen your lost pet or might be caring for it. Ask them to keep their eyes peeled.

  • Search the area: Start looking for your pet immediately and call its name. Your pet might respond to the sound of a pet food can being scraped with a spoon or the sound of a box of dog biscuits being shaken. Continue your search even after dark.

  • Post flyers: Provide a good description and a picture along with your phone number and the pet's name.

  • Contact your veterinarian: Let your vet know you've lost your pet in case someone finds it and calls around.
  • Keep looking: It's possible that someone found you pet and took it in for a few days or weeks. Continue searching for your pet and remind your neighbors that you are still looking.
  • Once you've found your missing pet, thank your lucky stars and take measures to ensure it doesn't go missing again. An identification/rabies tag is your pet's ticket home and a microchip will help ensure that your pet is returned to you if it's collar is somehow lost. Spaying or neutering will help eliminate your pet's urge to 'roam', and giving your pet plenty of your time and attention will remind him/her that the grass is not always greener on the other side.
