Testing positive for heartworms most times leaves a dog at a humane society/animal shelter with very few options. Most shelters can't afford the cost ($200-$400) or the time involved (8-12 weeks) to treat them. Jefferson County Humane Society works hard to enlist the aid of benevolent donors to help with treatment costs and is committed to saving these otherwise disposed of dogs. Please consider a donation to assist with the cost of their treatment. Typical heartworm treatment consists of injection/s of "immiticide" in the muscle along the back - these injection/s are to kill the adult heartworms. It is painful and the dog is usually very nauseous and miserable. The dog must be kept very quiet. They must not be allowed to run or get excited. An increase in heart rate could cause a migration of the dying heartworms to the lungs and causing clots of worms. They must be carefully watched, signs of concern include; coughing, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding and not wanting to eat. Also of concern would be tenderness or swelling around the injection site. This is a painful, stressful ordeal, not only for the dog but also for our staff and volunteers who watch helplessly as our shelter resdident travels this journey. CATS $50
includes: -spay/neuter, vaccinations,and microchip

DOGS $80
includes: -spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip

Spay and Neuter vouchers - available to Jefferson County
residents who already have pets. We currently have $50 vouchers for
dogs that are 40 pounds or more. Contact the shelter to request one.

All meeting are at the shelter.

Yummy recipes for your family and for your family pets. Humane Society cookbooks are $10 + tax. All proceeds benefit the Jefferson County Humane Society. Cookbooks are available at the shelter and at several retailers throughout Jefferson County. Makes a great gift!

Can you spare a few minutes to give a dog a walk, or a bath? Or just hand out a few brushes and pets to our homeless pets? Would you rather help in the office? Or with fundraising? We could always use more help! Please get involved. We especially need adult volunteers. For more information, call the Shelter Manager at 785-945-6600 or contact us online.

We need stuff!
Paper towels and bleach are always needed. We can also put your old towels, blankets, pet supplies, and some household items to good use, please see our Wish List for more items. Drop by the shelter Tuesday from 11am - 3pm, Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 6 p.m., or Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m., or call the shelter at 785-945-6600 to make an appointment.
