Our History
The Jefferson County Humane Society was formed in 1998 by a group of citizens
concerned about the lack of an animal shelter in Jefferson County, KS. Since
that time, the organization has acquired non-profit 501(c)(3) status and
has been raising funds to establish a shelter for unwanted, stray, and abandoned
pets.
In 2005, the Humane Society began working toward leasing a vacant veterinary
clinic near Valley Falls. After dozens of meetings with city and county
officials, the Humane Society board decided that there was enough support
to start shelter operations in 2006. Seven of the eight cities in Jefferson
County agreed to contribute to the Humane Society in exchange for animal
control boarding and for services to their residents (McLouth declined the
Humane Society's proposal). The county commission and the sheriff's department
agreed to contribute a portion of the funding we asked for to cover a limited
amount of boarding for the sheriff's department.
Our Shelter
The Humane Society shelter opened doors January 2, 2006, and started taking
in stray animals, owner-surrendered pets, and animals involved in criminal
investigations.
The shelter currently has a full-time manager, and four part-time employees
who take care of our animals' basic needs and shelter operations. We rely
heavily on volunteers to help the shelter cats and dogs become excellent
pets through training, handling, exercising, and providing companionship
and comfort. Learn more about volunteering.
Shelter operations are overseen by a volunteer board of directors. Contact
the board of directors.
